Notes

Using an undersized skein, but I am modifying the pattern to add 4 lace repeats. The following is cut-n-pasted from one of my forum posts when justsocks asked how to enlarge the design to use up a skein of WM 100:

  • On page 1 of the pattern, where it says “Repeat the following section a total of 7 times”, repeat that section a total of 9 times instead. This will give you a total of 40 more stitches. This isn’t a multiple of 11 yet, but hang on. You will have a total of 201 sts on the needles, and 21 sts in between the 2 markers.
  • Next, do a WS row (adds 2 sts. Total of 203 sts)
  • Work a RS row as follows: k3, kyok, k to 10 sts before m, m1R, k to m, sm, m1R, k to next m, m1L, sm, k10, m1L, k to last 4 sts, kyok, k3. (adds 8 sts. 211 sts total)
  • Work a WS row (adds 2 sts. 213 sts total).
  • Ignore the next few lines of the pattern & go immediately to the Work the Lace Section of the Shawlette section. You’ll go right to the charts.
  • This gives you an extra 4 lace repeats--I calculate that you’ll need an extra 34 yards for each extra repeat, so 4 repeats x 34 yards = an extra 134 yards. Since I’m estimating 420 yards for the project, your total would 556 yards. Since WM 100 has 575 yards, this leaves you some wiggle room in case your gauge is different, etc….

My data on this larger project:
Cast-on to end of stst section: 37 g
Chart 1: Used 11 g
Chart 2: Used 17 g
Chart 3: Used 10 g
Chart 4: Used 11 g
Have 56 g of yarn left at end of Chart 4 (my skein is undersized…only 140 g).

Chart 5: Used 46 g
Total mass of shawl= 130 g. I have 10 g left over. Squee!!

Note that my scale does not go beyond the decimal point, so there is a small margin of error (ie. my whole shawl weighs 130 g, but according to the # grams used for each section, it should weigh 132 g).
Finished measurement is 14” deep x 55” across (when lying flat & curved….55” across the widest part of the curve).
