Notes

Knitted for the Williams Gansey Project and worn by Joseph Ward on the Blyth Tall Ship round Britain expedition in 2019 on the leg from Anglesey to Ayr.

I picked up my yarn to knit this at Wonderwool 2017.

Row gauge wasn’t too bad on 2.75mm needle, but 32 stitches were nearer 5” than 4” on tension swatch. So I went down to a 2.5mm needle.

I completed the gansey in October but discovered after I’d finished that one of the cables on a shoulder panel was twisted the wrong way. So it took me until January to unpick part of the shoulder panel and carry out the repair shown.

All-in-all this has taken me 180 hours to make. It’s the very first gansey I’ve ever knitted and I’m incredibly pleased with how it’s turned out.

This gansey was already modestly well-travelled in the making. The wool was spun in Yorkshire, I picked it up in mid-Wales and have mostly knitted it in South Gloucestershire. It also spent a week on a canal boat in Oxfordshire and took a weekend trip to Coniston in the Lake District. I hope it will go on to have much more adventurous journeys in the future.
