After I worked the regular Garter German Short Row heel, I realized I wanted it deeper, but all of my ideas for adding the extra heel flap rows didn’t work out in my mind. So I repeated the second wedge of the German Short Row heel. I liked this wedge even better than the join to my first wedge, So I tried the second sock with my ideas and like it so much that I ripped out the first heel and duplicated my experiment. LOVE IT! Nice and round without the funny decrease lines on the sides of the heels. I worked each heel separately in tandem and then put them back on magic loop.

3 Wedge German Short Row Heel by Mindy

Set up row: Work front of sock in pattern, switch colors to contrast heel color (or keep working in same color). K across back of sock. Turn. The heel will be worked back and forth over the stitches on the back of sock only.

Place markers across these stitches in thirds. For the 72 st count, I have 13, 10, 13 stitches across the back with markers where the commas are.

DS, knit across, Turn
DS, knit to second marker, slipping markers as you come to them. k1, turn (repeat once).

DS, knit to DS, work DS, k1, turn (repeat this row until there are 2 DS stitches at the beginning of the last WS row. Finish the WS row, turn.

Start second Wedge.

Start third Wedge.
DS, knit to second marker, slipping markers as you come to them. k1, turn (repeat once).

DS, knit to DS, work DS, k1, turn (repeat this row until there are 4 DS stitches at the beginning of the last WS row. Finish the WS row, turn.

Finish the Heel.
DS (you can remove the markers as you come to them).
Knit across to the 4 DS stitches at the end of the row. Ktbl each of these stitches, then pick up a stitch by knitting tbl 2 legs of neighbor stitches a row down together. turn

Slip purlwise with yarn in front. K across to last 4 DS stitches. Ktbl each of these stitches, then pick up a stitch by purling 2 legs of neighbor stitches a row down together. (picked up from the right side). Turn

Switch colors. Begin working in the round again. ktbl the picked up stitch with the first stitch of the back needle. K across to the last 2 back stitches. K2tog the last stitch of the heel with the picked up stitch. Work the front of sock in pattern.

I shifted my stitches on this round to continue working 2 at a time on magic loop. I decided to do the cuff ribbing all the way up the back of the sock with no cable twists on the back. So I shifted my socks around so that each side started with K2, P2 and then only worked the cables on the front sides.

4 repeats before cuff

20 rounds 2x2 rib for the cuff
