Reddit WIP updates:
Waiting on yarn, but decided to post my planning in hopes that I will update this throughout the year.
We moved / started a new life on Nov 3rd - so I decided to join the bandwagon and make a daily temperatures something to commemorate our first year here.
From the start I knew I wanted to do both highs and lows, also decided that a blanket seemed more fitting. So…. all that left was the design. Settled on a chevron/herring bone, partial mitered square design (that I can find no examples of so maybe I created something new?) because it gives direction and flow while still letting me do several rows.
Struggled with the sizing/layout of the blocks until I realized we had moved on the new moon, so obviously each row had to be 29.5 days long (time it takes for a full lunar cycle) which gives 59 chevrons alternating daily high and low temps. That left only the question of 12 or 13 rows/moons (oh and colors); in the end I think 13 is the better number plus 12 is less than a year.
EDIT: Started the project using daily highs & lows but with a little SQL magic the overnight lows were extracted; this changes less than a quarter of the nights and in most cases only shifts them by one color, anyhow using the overnight low fits better with the story I want this to tell which makes me happy.
Picked out a rainbow of color that is slightly desaturated and heavy with purples and blue/greens. Then mapped out what it would have looked like for last year to check my mix. AND… after getting yarn ditching the true yellow and maxing the scale at 93.
EDIT: The Arctic Vortex gave us over a week of nights below 27, the majority of which were below 22. So… below 17 will be black and if this summer is so cursed as to get above 103 that will be black as well or maybe Currant.
Each chevron will be the last 6th of a mitered square. Reading will flow in the direction of the chevrons, top to bottom. The small chevron starting each row will echo the color of the last chevron of the previous row. Each row will be crocheted as one scarf and then all the scarves joined later and trimmed.

EDIT: Decided to mark the transition between months (and years). Decided on one ditch in the middle of the night chevron between each month and two ditches for the new year.
Month Transition Pattern Changes -
Create “long tail” about 12x the length of the chevron.
Row 1: Use long tail. Pull through at the end of the row.
Row 2: Do NOT turn. Return to the start of Row 1 and work Row 2
Row 5: Change to blo. Cut and pull tail through last stitch.
Row 6: Pick up the rest of the long tail. Work Row 6 in the same direction as Row 5.
Year Transition Pattern Changes: Rows 4 & 6, blo
