This is the first thing that my husband ever asked me to make for him. He liked the sweater that I knit for our son so much that he actually requested that I make something for him!
Here are the things I would change from the notes below. It fits, but the fit would be just a little better with the following modifications:
-knit the body about 2 inches longer
-knit the sleeves about 1-2 inches shorter
Gauge = 17 stitches per 4 inches
Body
Cast on 188 sts for a 42 inch body.
K2p2 for 2 inches.
Knit stockinette until body measured a total of 18 inches.
Sleeves
Knit two at a time using magic loop.
Cast on 40 sts.
K2p2 for 2 inches
Increased 2 sts at each side.
Knit stockinette.
Increased 2 sts every 7 rows until 64 total sts.
Knit until sleeves measured 22 inches.
Join
Joined sleeves to body.
Left 10 sts from each sleeve and body on waste yarn to be grafted together later.
Decreased in pattern until 32 sts (plus 2 marked sts) remained.
Saddle
Knit about 30 rows, nipping 20 body stitches on each side.
I made the first saddle and then knit around the front to the other side to complete the second saddle. I did not cast off stitches for the fronts of each sleeve. I left all of stitches on the needles.
Yoke
To knit the yoke, I knit on the first 16 sts of the second saddle shoulder then turned and purled back on those same 16 sts. At the end of the row, I purled 2 together, one from the sleeve and the other from the body back. When I reached the first saddle, I grafted the 16 sts together with 16 sts from the first saddle.
Neck
I had 54 sts left on my needles after completing the yoke. I picked up an extra 26 sts for a total of 80 sts for the neck.
Knit 2x2 rib for 4 rows.
Purl 1 turning row.
Knit stockinette for 4 rows.
Turn stockinette collar under and sew at start of neck.
