I am knitting two of these scarves at once, one using a variegated Regia sock yarn (wool and nylon) and one using the Hobbycraft WI 100% Acrylic Soft and Silky 4ply/fingering yarn in a solid colour to see whether the pattern works with a variegated yarn as well as with a solid colour.
