Saw this knit up at Green Planet Yarn in Malabrigo Lace, so I decided to knit one up myself. I’m going to change it up a bit and use some of my MadelineTosh tosh lace as I prefer knitting with plyed yarn. The nature of this shawl will show off the color transitions in this yarn.
Summary
-
I decided to go with a US 5 (3.75 mm) needle since thats what was used for the Green Planet Yarn shop sample. I know that Renata8 and I have a similar gauge. NOTE: this changed when I discovered she actually used a US 4 (3.5 mm). I ripped out and started knitting using the US 4.
-
I’m using markers at each change from K to P and from P to K. This makes the knitting more mindless and more suitable to public knitting situations, although, it may create some slight laddering.
-
I thought the nickel needles were a little sticky, so when I went for the US 4’s I went back to the aluminum ones.
-
I am slipping the first stitch with yarn in front (instead of in back). This gives a cleaner edge.
-
The bottom 2 photos were knit using US 5 (3.75 mm) needles. The remaining photos show knitting using US 4 (3.5 mm) needles.
-
I counted the stitches in the final section + the half a pattern repeat and it looks like I’ll need about 20 grams to finish the scarf.
Watch Out For
- when blocking the ending point is very long and then while the starting point is very shallow. You will need to fiddle with the ends a bit to get them balanced.
Journal

2015-08-09: Complete intro. 109.7 grams remain.
2015-08-12: Darn. I thought Renata8 used a 5, but she used a 4, so I ripped out and am starting again. Cast on using LTCO on a US 4.
2015-08-14: Complete setup.
2015-08-18: Complete intro section.
2015-08-20: Complete first pattern repeat.
2015-08-27: Complete second pattern repeat. 89.2 grams remain. (Note: the label is still in the skein and will be for other measurements. Its the difference between measurments that count)
2015-08-30: Complete third pattern repeat. 80.4 grams remain. 8.8 grams used.
2015-09-06: Complete 4th pattern repeat. 70.9 grams remain. 9.5 grams used. Not sure why the difference since the repeats are the same.
2015-09-07: Complete 5th pattern repeat. 61.2 grams remain; 9.7 grams used. This number shouldn’t be increasing as the pattern repeat doesn’t change. I’ve removed the label from the ball and re-weighed it. It now weighs 58.7 grams.
2015-09-09: Complete 6th pattern repeat; 50.0 grams remain; 8.7 grams used.
2015-09-10: Complete 7th pattern repeat & thread a lifeline. (I’m threading lifelines at the end of each pattern repeat from here on out, just in case I need to rip out a repeat due to lack of yarn. This is the last repeat called for by the pattern.) 41.1 grams remain; 8.9 grams used.
2015-09-12: Complete 8th pattern repeat & thread a lifeline. 32.5 grams remain; 8.6 grams used.
2015-09-14: Complete 9th pattern repeat; 23.3 grams remain; 9.2 grams used.
2015-09-15: Complete final 1/2 repeat; complete middle section; 18.6 grams remain.
2015-09-16: Complete 44 rows of end section. 11.1 grams remain.
2015-09-17: Complete end section.
2015-09-18: Blocking complete. Ends woven in. Waiting for pictures…
Yarn Usage Summary
First Time
- I tried using my new dyakcraft nickel needles, but they weren’t slippery enough for this pattern, so I switched back to the dyakcraft aluminum needles.
