Notes

I created a tube using Kroy sock yarn in Sock Machine Tests. I’m going to use that tube to create a afterthought heel sock. The yarn used for the tube is accounted for in my tests page, so I won’t have accurate yardage counts for this sock.

Journal

2016-05-09: Begin adding a 2x2 ribbed cuff to the end of the tube.

2016-05-10: Put stitches on the needle from end of tube and knit 12 rounds of 2x2 rib. Bind off using JSSBO.

2015-05-11: Complete heel.

2015-05-12: Complete knitting toe.

2015-05-13: Kitchener toe and weave in ends. Time to move to second sock.

2015-05-14: Complete second cuff, heel & toe. Kitchener toe closed and weave in ends.

2015-05-15: Socks blocked. waiting for pictures….

Summary

  • I am using US 1.5 (2.50 mm) needles to work the cuff, heel and toe.

  • I used all of 2 skeins of kroy sock when making the tube. However, all of the tube won’t be used for these socks.

  • Cuff: Knit 12 rounds K2 P2 rib. Bind off with JSSBO.

  • Heel Pickup: My sock is 60 stitches divided across 2 circular needles. My heel opening will be 30 stitches - 2 edge stitches + 28 stitches. Mark the 2 edge stitches so the yarn unraveling doesn’t include the edge stitch. Mark the center stitch and clip it. Using 2 circulars (or double points, pick up the stitches on each side of the opening as the stitches are “freed”. After the completion of one side of the heel, slide the needles to use the other point and repeat the process. There should be 28 stitches on each needle.

  • Heel, begin knitting: I’m going to begin knitting in the middle of the sole so I don’t have an end to weave in at the heel/sock corners. I will reset the start of round at the end of the first round: Join yarn at middle and knit to corner; pickup 2 stitches in the corner; knit to other corner; pickup 2 stitches in corner; knit past middle and knit to corner resetting start of round. Begin knitting “toe” (aka heel) as follows: Round 1- k1, ssk, k to 3 stitches before end of first needle, k2tog, k1, k1 ssk, k to 3 stitches before end of second needle, k2tog, k1. Round 2 - K. Repeat rounds 1 & 2 6 times, then repeat round 1, 7 times until 4 stitches remain. Knit 2 stitches on next needle and rearrange by moving 2 stitches from the end of each needle to the front of the other needle. Graft closed with Kitchener.

  • Second heel: Knit the heel as above. Once the last round is completed, knit 2 more stitches and rearrange stitches on needle so that yarn is at end of needle, ready to begin kitchener. This change results in the kitchener being done “perpendicular to the heel, creating a continuous band around the heel.

  • Toe: Begin knitting in the middle of the sole. knit the first “K” to the end of the sole. KD 9 times, then Kitchener closed.

Next Time

  • I forgot to start the cuff with a single stockinette row in the contrast color. This prevents the 2 color purl bumps from being visible. Next time maybe I’ll remember.
