Notes

This is a very pretty pattern and is easy to knit, but I have two minor complaints about the pattern, and I even hesitate to mention them because it is a free pattern.

  1. No gauge is given. This wasn’t a major problem for me because I have knitted lots of fingerless mitts, many of my own “design.” But really, at least a stitch gauge should be given, and a row gauge would be nice, too.

My gauge in stst on a 4mm circular needle (ML):
11 stitches = 2 inches
17 rows = 2 inches

Finished length = 8 inches
Finished width = 3.5 inches (7 inches in circumference unstretched)

  1. There is nothing in the directions about picking up stitches on the thumb gusset. This is not a problem for someone who has knitted mitts before, but it would be a problem for a newbie. I picked up four, then decreased two to make a little gusset in the crook of the thumb.

<big>Mods:<big>

I started with 2 x 2 ribbing instead of 1 x 1, but when I did the ribbing for the fingers, I didn’t like the way the 2 x 2 ribbing flowed from the pattern stitches, so I switched to 1 x 1 ribbing for the fingers and thumb. Next time, I’ll probably start with 1 x 1 ribbing.

I started the thumb gussets after completing 2 repeats of the pattern instead of 3, then did the increases every 3rd round instead of every other round.

After finishing the thumb gusset, I knitted one repeat of the pattern instead of 2, then started the ribbing.
