Modifications:

Cast on 32 stitches instead of 50.

Decreased the number of stitches in each half of the pattern (palm and back of the hand) to 16 and 16 instead of 25 and 25.

Worked thumb gusset increases to 15 stitches, then knit 3 more rounds without increases.

The wrist cuff has 6 garter ridges (1.75 inches), then I knit 6 more rounds in pattern before beginning the thumb gusset increases.

After putting the thumb stitches on waste yarn, I knitted 3 more pattern repeats (6 rounds total), then worked in garter stitch until there were 3 garter ridges. I knit one more round, then bound of using EZ’s sewn bind off, which created a 4th garter ridge.

I picked up the 15 live stitches from the waste yarn, picked up and knit 2 stitches on the gap, then on the next round, I ssk’ed the last gusset stitch with the first picked-up stitch. Then I knit the second picked-up stitch together with the first stitch of the round and knit around. I knitted 4 more rounds, then bound off.

I was using yarn left over from another project, so I made the finger section of the mitts shorter than I normally do. The mitts cover the first row of knuckles, so my fingers are uncovered.
