My 3rd attempt at mitt 1 brought success. The first try, I was using 2.75mm needles, but my gauge was 8 spi instead of 7 and the mitt was too small. I only knitted it to a little beyond the beginning of the thumb gusset before trying it on, so, really, it was just a swatch.

I moved up to a size 3mm needles and knitted to a few rounds beyond the end of the thumb gusset and once again tried it on. The stitch gauge was spot on and the circumference fit very well, but the mitt was just too short. The cuff barely reached my wrist.

I ripped back to the round before the first thumb gusset increase, and knitted a second repeat of the pattern, doing the first thumb gusset increase in this second repeat instead of in the first one as the pattern calls for. In other words, in the first pattern repeat, I left out the M1 in round 8, and did the M1 in round 8 in the second pattern repeat. This made the cuff longer and started the thumb gusset in a better place. This might be a good time to mention that my row gauge is 10 rows per inch and the pattern calls for 11 rows per inch.

Another modification I made was doing M1L and M1R on either side of the thumb gussets instead of doing them all as M1L. I just prefer to have the increases mirror each other.

I knitted the rest of the pattern as directed except for adding one more pattern repeat before working the ribbing for the top cuff and knitting 2 rounds plain on the thumb before starting the ribbing. I ended up with 7 cables total, rather than 5.

The left mitt weighs 15g, as does the right mitt.
