Orange You Glad Waffle Mitts (Make 2)

Waffle Stitch
Rnds 1 & 2: (K2, P2) 11 times
Rnd 3: K around
Rnd 4: P around

Using the Alternating Long-Tail Cast on (p. 46-8 in Cast On, Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor) and 4.5mm needles, cast on 44 stitches in k2, p2 pattern.

Changing to 4.0mm needles, knit 20 rounds of k2, p2 ribbing stitch.

Begin working the Waffle Stitch pattern and work rounds 1-3. On round 4, begin the thumb gusset as follows:

Rnd 4 (first increase round): P28, pm, K1, M1, K1, pm, P14

Continue knitting in waffle pattern, working the stitches between the markers in stst. Work increases every 3rd round as follows: work in pattern to first marker. Slip marker, K1, M1R, knit to one stitch before the second marker, M1L, K1, slip marker, continue in waffle pattern.

Continue in pattern, working the increases every third round until there are 17 stitches between the markers.

Continue knitting in pattern 3 more rounds, ending with a round 4.

On the next round, work round 1 of the pattern to the marker, remove marker and place the 17 thumb stitches on waste yarn, remove the second marker, cast on 2 stitches onto the RH needle using backward loop cast on, continue in pattern to the end of the round.

Keep working in pattern for 3 more pattern repeats, ending with a round 4, then work in K2, P2 ribbing for 8 rounds.

Bind off using (EZ’s) sewn bind off.

Thumb:
Move the 17 thumb stitches from waste yarn to needle. (I use Magic Loop.) Pick-up and knit 3 stitches across the 2 cast-on stitches, 20 stitches on the needle. This is the end of the round.

Next round: K2tog, K13, SSK, S2KPSSO (16 stitches total)

Knit 6 rounds of K2, P2 ribbing, then bind off.

Weave in ends.
