Notes

After several complex lace shawls, I was yearning for something quick, zen and colourful. My pile of assorted Kureyon was calling out to me, and my Boxing Day additions to the horde demanded some urgent de-stashing!

Maine Morning are a staple - I’ve done this pair for myself (may be gifted eventually, I’ve too many mitts as it is) but think I might try another pair in a manly colour for my cousin. Or perhaps, the Soldier’s Glomit, but that would require far more wool.

Might follow this up with a satisfying 1-skein “Edgar” scarf.

June 10 2012: LOVE these mittens, but had to frog them to reclaim a matching ball of Kureyon for a large panel on my 64 Crayons blanket. sniff I miss you already, delightful Maine mittens of warmness. :(

Tip: weighed my skein first (49g), then started knitting and went until the last half weighed about 25g. That way you can use the whole ball without having uneven glove lengths.

Pattern Notes: Did 25 rounds of ribbing before the thumb, and 12 rounds after. Could have gone a bit longer after the thumb, to cover more of the fingers. Had 6g left for both thumbs, which is 3g each hand - more than enough to cover my tiny thumbs! (see photos). Still have about 2g left.

Needle Notes: I was using my mum’s ancient metal 4.5mm 8” DPNs for this, and they are wayyyy too long. So I went to Lettuce Knit in Toronto the day after Boxing Day asking if they had some nice short 5” ones in the same thickness, and oh my gosh - after Christmas they were totally sold out of 4mm, 4.5mm AND 5mm DPNs, and so are all of their distributors. Word to the wise - invest in these sizes early for the winter season!

Audiobook note: knit these while listening to the somewhat repetitive (but well read) “Elephants Can Remember” by Agatha Christie. Also finished on the same day that I completed my 4-year long solo project “Roughing it in the Bush” by Susanna Moodie, on LibriVox. Yayyyy!
