I added an extra increase row.

Row 5 of pattern I changed to HDC for my decorative stripe

I changed row 7 of pattern to add handles as follows:

Count stitches in last round and divide by 2.

Starting 6 stitches from the hook count out that number of stitches and place a marker. Count out that number of stitches again and place another marker. Place markers 3 stitches on either side of both those markers (for a total of 6 stitch markers).

ch 1, 1 sc in same st as join.
1 sc in each stitch until you reach the first marker.
chain 10
1 sc in stitch after the 3rd marker. That will leave 7 stitches unworked, and form the base for your first handle.
1 sc in each stitch around to next set of markers.
chain 10
1 sc in stitch after the 3rd marker.
1 sc in each stitch and join with a sl st in the first sc of this round.

The last round: chain 1, sc in same stitch as join, and in each sc around and in each chain of handles…to the 1st chain in this round. sl st to join.
