I was good and knit a gauge swatch and very clearly got 5 1/3 st/inch. Which very neatly equaled 96 st for an 18 inch hat.

Dec 16: I’m using the 6s for the cast-on and initial k2p2 ribbing, and the 7s for the body. I’m now three rows into the body, and my gauge looks a lot more like 5 st/inch. Looks like I’ll have to frog and recast on with fewer stitches.

Dec 17: Frogged and cast on again with fewer stitches. CO 84 with the 6s for k2p2 ribbing and increased to 90 st and size 7 needles after an inch of ribbing.

Dec 20: Finished! The finishing was fiddly but really made the hat.
