Notes

Using double knitting to do the color work since intarsia is my nemesis. Every piece is double knit in the round (i.e. fins and flippers consist of 4 total layers of knitting).

Crocheted provisional cast on let me close the nose neatly and made a stable start for the small number of stitches and lots of increases.

The body pattern has some errors in terms of stitch counts, etc., but I’d charted out the color pattern in its entirety, so it was easy to see where the errors were and follow along in the general shape of the pattern.
If you can read your knitting and logic it out (e.g. ignore stitch counts and just decrease every x rows), it’s not a big deal.

Sewn-on pieces done with a snug long tail cast on to provide a steady selvedge edge, and a very long tail used for stitching on the pieces.

Colors arranged so the tips of the fins and tail pieces had no color changes for the last couple of rows; this made the layers separate, so they could be grafted shut separately. Selvedge edge also separates, so the inner layer could be sewn on first, then the outer.

Inner layer sewn on with a double layer of yarn, then doubled yarn was used to backstitch along the seam to secure the two layers of the body fabric together. Outer layer of fins sewn with a single piece of yarn, taking very small stitches similar to kitchener grafting, then yarn was worked around in a spiral with small back stitches attaching two layers of body about 1/2” out from the fin/tail attachments. This made the attachment much more stable; the fins were a bit floppy at first, but that extra stitching firmed them up.

I also marked the attachment points with pieces of light gray yarn before stitching the pieces on, since it made evenly stretching and placing the pieces much easier.

The nose bumps were added when I’d just begun the blowhole increases, so I had a generous opening and not too much other fabric to deal with. I made them above the mouth line as far up the face as I could at that point in the knitting, which looks perfect. This yarn really blooms when washed, so I’m not sure how much the nose bumps will show after some wear, but they add a great tactile element.

Eyes embroidered on with a couple yards of scrap KP Stroll in black.

Crossing my fingers that I have enough yarn to make one for myself! I (very stupidly) didn’t weigh the skeins before I started knitting, so I have no idea how close they were to an exact 50 g each. I have 73.8 g of gray and 74.8 g of blue left.

Thanks go to allicat777’s Hazel for inspiring the stripes under the eyes/in front of the fin attachments. I was lost and confused, trying to chart out terrible color patterns, until I decided that I liked that so much I just had to imitate it. I hope she’s flattered and not offended! Some other elements of her and others’ designs clearly sank in too, although I wasn’t trying to copy anything else. If anyone wants my colorwork charts, send me a message and (if I get my act together and don’t procrastinate too much) I can post them.
