top of sock is noticeably shorter than the sole, so decided to knit top with 2.75mm and sole with 2.5mm needle. Hoping this will even out the row count.
Sept 2016 Decided to finish this pair of socks. Whew! Instead of working on the sock I already had in progress, I started #2 from the beginning, without even looking to see what I had done with the first sock. Big mistake! Sock was coming out way too small even after I got it long enough, so I had to add a bunch of sts to the heel so it would fit around my foot. Oh well. It looks OK and the first sock was easier to finish cuz I had ignored the directions and made it on 64 sts with a large gusset. I didn’t like the 11 st cable cross, but I guess the socks will look OK as much as anyone will see them.
SO - here are more notes on toe up socks - increase foot sts to 60 to 64 sts, knit until mark on foot template to start gusset sts. Keep on knitting until the back heel mark (abt 2” from very back of foot) to turn heel. Remember to turn the heel from the edges in rather than from the middle to the edge like on top down heels.
I find that cabled socks fit a bit better if I use a 2.75 needle on the top of the foot where the cables are and a 2.50 needle on the bottom. After heel turn, change both needles to 3.0 for leg (64 sts is a good number) and bind off with 3.25 needles.
