Notes

This is the simple and easy way to break into colour work. Using a solid and a multi yarn creates a beautiful texture that will is as fun to knit as it is to look at.

The pattern is merely notes from the designer, but it is easily transferrable to your favourite sock recipe. I chose to do these socks from the toe up.

These socks are based on the pattern created by handepande.

Notes

Guage: 9 stitches to the inch in stockinette stitch.

Foot

  • Cast on 15 stitches using a Turkish cast-on, Figure Eight cast on, or Judy’s Magic cast-on (the latter is my favourite cast-on method).
  • Increase toe: Alternate knit rounds with K1, M1 (K into front and back of stitch), K (knit) to last two stitches, M1, K1. Continue alternating these two rows until you reach 27 stitches.
  • Begin the colour work patterning:

R1: (solid): knit
R2: N1 (top of foot) (multi): k1, p1; N2 (bottom of foot) K
R3: (solid): knit
R4: N1 (top of foot) (multi): p1, k1; N2 (bottom of foot) K

  • Continue until the foot measures approximately 2 to 3 inches shy of the total length of your foot. You will then begin the gusset.

Gussett

  • R1: Stitch in pattern on N1 (top of foot) (multi); N2: K1, M1, K to last 2 stitches, M1, K1 (multi yarn)
  • R2: N1, K all stitches with solid; N2: K all stitches with solid.
  • Repeat these 2 rows until N2 has 53 stitches.

Heel
This is a gusset heel that will be knit at the same time as turning the heel.

  • You will now work back and forth with the 53 stitches now on N2, alternating each colour as you go.

  • P (purl) 30 stitches, P 2tog, P1, turn.

  • S1, K 7; , ssk, K1, turn.

  • S1, P 8, P 2tog, P1, turn

  • S1, K 9, ssk, K1, Turn Continue in this manner until you have 27 stitches left on the needle.

  • Begin knitting in the round, keeping continuity of pattern. Your first round will be with the solid; K all stitches round.

  • TIP: To avoid holes where the gusset meets the heel, pick up one stitch at the beginning and end of round and knit it with the next stitch.

Keep watch on the progress as I’ll add to the instructions as I complete my test sock.
