Notes

The pattern calls for a small gauge with fingering yarn. I decided to use sport weight because I like the fabric. I had to do a lot of math. I’m keeping notes and will make the pattern changes available when I’m finished, for any ravelers who want to use sport weight.

I like to make 2 socks or mitts at a time on 2 circs, which is how I knit these. I used size 1 Knitters Pride needles. 1 or of Novas and 1 pr of Karbonz (which I love love love for small dimension needles.)

I loosely cast on 54 stitches using a knitted cast on. After calculating my gauge and considering the pattern stitch was multiples of 6 I rounded down from what I would have needed if it was straight knitting because the ribbed pattern is extremely stretchy. My gauge was 28 stitches to the inch rather than that 32 called for.

I knit a much longer arm than the pattern called for because I wear a lot of capes and 3:4 sleeve tops.

I didn’t want these mitts to be loose so the only increases I made were for 1 side of the hand and the thumb gusset. I did the increases just as they are written for the thumb gusset, but after the work 5 stitches in pattern directions, the kfb should go BEFORE the p1. I used markers to help me regain the fragmented pattern between the purls as soon as possible and to help me “see” the pattern.

After the 6 increases my stitch count was 66 because 12 stitches were added. I knit the appropriate length and then did the thumb gusset with that same correction of reversing the last p1 and kfb.

When it was time to move my thumb gusset stitches to wast yarn, I moved 12 stitches (remember my original cast on was 6 stitches less than the pattern allied for)

When I made the thumbs, I picked up 6 stitches across the cast on edge rather than 8 but on my first round I picked up a stitch on either side of the cast on stitches and knit it together to tighten up the little gaps. I used the same bind off for the thumb.

When it was time to bind off, I didn’t use a very stretchy bind off because I wanted these mitts snug at the fingers. So, rather than Jeny’s surprisingly stretchy bind off, I did the k2 tbl, transfer the stitch back to the left needle and repeat for the bind off. It’s just a bit stretchy.

If you look carefully at the stitch pattern there are only 2 stitches in the pattern that change from knit to purl. Depending upon how you learn or remember, that may help you. The 2 patterns are k2 p1 k1 p2 and k1 p1 k2 p2. So just stitch 2 and 3 change.

The Knit Picks Felici Sport was great to work with. I did have to cut out about 13 or 14 inches of a color at 2 different places from 1 skein, to keep the self striping even on both mitts.
