Prototype done and no problems with how the yarn has knitted up at all. Although wearable the pattern could be tweaked to make a better glove as this is too long in the hand and fingers for me really. Realigning the surface design is necessary as well as amending the glove pattern.

Note 14 It really is well worth all the effort taken handling the temporary stitches. There is no stretching or corner holes and the pick up is seamless. Fine yarns also seem to make the whole pick up process easier as well. Could not be happier with the thumb. The oversized hole has worked well and decreasing in the crook makes for a well fitting thumb.

Note 13 Settle on eventual colours - definitely not the darker blue grey.

Note 12 Finger length does not seem quite so bad now. I just prefer the fingers to be different lengths rather than all the same. It is unavoidable though if the border is to be included.

Note 11 Changed into a prototype now. If it should become a pattern to share in the future need to consider how to incorporate finger adjustment. Best place is actually at the finger tips where extra border pattern can be added to lengthen the fingers and put back any hand adjustment rows within reason. Might as well re-think, redraft and rework now, given that the cuff could do with a bit of re-drafting. For my hand - take out one whole set of flowers realign pattern to allow for a slight shortening of the finger and add a complete border scroll at the tip. This then enables the thumb gusset to be shortened by half a pattern repeat - better for my hand. Swap the border scroll pattern and make it more like Warren’s.

After realignment hand length cuff to base of ring finger shortened by 9 rows and cuff of short glove should sit comfortably below where arm begins to thicken.

Note 10 Hand fit is looking good. Just a bit of a reservation with the cuff. Could add four stitches to the rework if I want to maintain the length. Alternatively, if I want to maintain the current wrist circumference it needs to be a touch shorter. Thinking about it.

Note 9 Amendment to surface design has worked to my advantage and have replaced partial flowers at the finger tips with a floral border just like Warren’s gloves. The lotus has been used instead of the trefoil in this first attempt as it is easier to work - not so many three colour rounds. A spiral top has been worked rather than the flat semicircle of the Warren gloves - the later does not make for such a close fitting finger tip.

Note 8 Going OK, pattern drafted just needs upper hand shortened a few rounds. Temp holding of stitches on crochet cotton and crystaline working well for little finger it seems. Wondering what can go wrong. All seems to be going too easy!

Note 7 - Thumb opening seems OK, might be a little too generous but as the yarn is fine want to circumvent pulling and tightness around the thumb.

Note 6 - Measuring the project in motifs is a useful exercise. The Appleton hand is 6 motifs, the RD 7 motifs and the eventual glove will need to be 8 motifs. Looking more and more likely the special cashmere stash and 0.7mm needles will work. The RD crewel on 0.7mm might also work.

Note 5 Not all crewel is the same. Appletons is thicker with a sort of home spun look and Renaissance Dye finer and smoother giving a crisper look to the motif. Both yarns are fabulous but the latter has the edge for this project.

Note 4 Blackwork started. Could not have planned the base of the thumb gusset any better. Just hope it looks as good on the hand when done!

Note 3 - Left cuff a good fit - at least 2 days work.

Note 2
The lotus section of the cuff worked almost identically to the museum gloves, only the background changed and the speckle colours. Weaves kept to the minimum and finish superior to the trefoil border because of this. In light of this have modified the trefoil pattern slightly and will execute on the right glove.

Note 1
Border under way. Cast on mimics chain of the real Warren Hastings reasonably well and easy to work. The added braids minimise cuff rolling. Gauge is looking like 20 stitches per inch. Working with 3 colours requires all my concentration at this gauge and 12 rounds in one sitting is about as much as I can do.
