As a gift to myself I purchased Weldon’s practical knitter series from Interweave in the year end sale. A bargain! I just love to knit with tiny needles and there is certainly a lot of stuff here to knit! The absence of tension guidance and yarns that no longer exist means it is all a bit hit and miss. The Andalusian yarn in the pattern has been substituted with 4 ply and on my third attempt I have settled on size 14 needles (UK) rather than the recommended 16 and 18.
Having now completed the left mitt I think I might try 13 for the welt on a future pair. To make the rib on the upper edge to work out correctly it was necessary to eliminate two stitches, this was done in by purling two tog twice in the pattern zone when working the first row of rib. I eliminated twelve rows above the welt and worked the pattern strip from the top of the wrist welt to the finger welt. The original pattern has a zone of stocking stitch either side of the patterning.
After working the second mitt I was a bit disappointed that they did not look identical in the thumb increase region and ended up sewing them up with a back stitch. I would probably omit the slip stitch if working flat again but have decided to try a pair worked in the round.
I just love the colour but beware, I found they bled slightly when I gave them a quick wash.
