This was Carolyn’s idea. I just executed it. These are hyperbolic baby pants, except that it turns out that you can also make them into a 2-holed torus, and you can embed a map requiring eight colors on the 2-holed torus. (The map is dual to K_8, the largest complete graph that cellularly embeds on the 2-holed torus.) So I converted that embedding to a knitting pattern. Carolyn also did this, but she used a different version of the embedding. This was done for a talk at the G4G8 conference that Carolyn gave.
