Notes

I shamelessly copied ing-wer’s Noro idea, but I added doing almost everything in-the-round and waist shaping. The math and construction were fun and the result is mostly good! I’m really loving gray and red together lately.

My husband says my previous project name is offensive in other parts of the world. Sorry. Stupid Americans.

Gauge in garter st blocked is 24 sts x 44 rows = 4in, 24x48 before block

Yarn is madelinetosh merino light (again) in Astrid gray for MC, a light-medium gray with yellow undertones. Noro Taiyo Sock S59 for CC is a new colorway with red, orange, magenta, and purple. Lots of the gray left and only a few yards of the Noro at the end.

Body in-the-round because I dislike seaming. It was all very well until the end when I couldn’t sew in underarm gussets. Fine for me I didn’t make or want them, the shoulders fit fine, but for a more dolman look I think they may have been nice.

Here’s how I started (=1 triangle set):

  • Co 3 (1 front, 1 side seam, 1 back; or vice versa)
  • 1st row in 1st st, purl 1 (side seam), 1st row in 3rd st again
  • Same, keeping reverse stockinette side seam st
  • Waist shaping decreases: on RS at 8cm (approx 15th garter ridge) dec 1 (k2tog/ssk) per triangle 4sts in from side seam (incl m1 in count), rep 2 more times every 10 rows (at 11cm, 14cm) = 12sts decreased.

Make 2.

Attaching 2 triangle sets, joining row slightly different to get it all in-the-round:

  • Cut yarn on second triangle set, sl half sts (=1 left triangle) to second needle including side seam st
  • Knit joining row as directed, this is the right triangle
  • Continue to other right triangle and repeat joining row
  • All WS rounds will now be purl, rather than knit as in pattern
  • For gussets should separate front and back at last 9 (or however many for gusset size) garter repeats, I didn’t do/realize this. Would need to calculate how many cm’s before separating using root-2 and CO 1 at each edge for seaming.
  • Waist shaping increases: after 19cm on RS, m1l 4sts in on right triangles, and m1r 4sts in from side seam st on left triangles. Repeat once more on 14th row (23cm)

Hem bind off with US7 needle

Waist shaping measurements were from my Antler; to customize to your own liking, get number of rows by dividing vertical meas by square-root(2) to project onto normal of hypotenuse, then used row gauge to calculate # rows needed.

Sleeves Made all 4 sleeve triangles and knitting both sleeves at once (possibly sleeves could have been in-the-round using the same strategy as for body). Made sleeves 2.5cm longer, they’re a little wide for my taste.

To get Noro colors on sleeves mostly matching: Picking up for bottom triangle, knit first two CC stripes on one sleeve, broke yarn and knit first 2 stripes on second sleeve with same color. Broke yarn and edited out rest of first color then knit 3rd stripe; broke yarn and knit 3rd stripe on other sleeve and remaining stripes. So many ends to weave now.

Picked up 55 sts for wider cuffs (=23cm which is 1cm less than filler triangle width)

Yoke in-the-round. Joining rnd: K2tog side seam st and last sleeve st, k across back, ssk side seam st and first right sleeve st. CDD at center of front & back and center of sleeves (=8sts dec every other rnd).

For underarm ease without gussets should maybe have left 3 sts from each edge of body and sleeves on holders to 3-needle-bind-off. Didn’t do this but wish I did.

Started round at join between right sleeve and back, but realized on collar that maybe could have put round start hidden in right sleeve CDD: on WS rnd purl all the way around to marked right sleeve center st, sl last st back to left needle then work CDD. Maybe this could be neater.

Did traveling jogless stripes.

Every round takes forever and a day. So. Many. Stitches.

Raise back of neck after last MC stripe: work 8 garter repeats like pattern says for front yoke, then “separated” front and back. Left front sts on holder, center sleeve sts went with back. At this point, the neck opening seems really small but it won’t be in the end.

Broke yarn at back round marker and moved round start to center of right sleeve/beg of RS row for back. CO 1, ssk etc as in pattern, CO 1 at end of first rs row. Cont pattern for back yoke.

Collar in-the-round, again CDD at sides instead of k2tog/ssk as in pattern. BO with US7 needle, maybe 8 would have been better.

Finishing just sew sleeve seams and weave ends!
