Notes

Knitting this as a baby blanket for my niece.
She is expected this February, so I figured she will need a thicker blanket than the summer baby nephew.
I like square shawl/blankets, that mommy can wear around her neck and take off to wrap the baby for a nap.

Maternity leave is short in Switzerland, so baby will be in daycare at just a few weeks, which is why I am making the blanket in a superwash yarn - who knows whether the nurses will be good wool washers, and a working mom certainly doesn’t have to take out extra time of her day to wash wool (which isn’t her forte).
Because superwash tends to stretch and grow, I am knitting the blanket on a 4mm needle, rather than the 4.5mm the pattern asks for (and the blanket will be big enough to cover a baby at any gauge ;-))

As predicted, the blanket grew and relaxed massively in the washing machine, had I knit looser, the post-wash blanket would have been too loose for comfort. Now the gauge matches the pattern.

Personally, I am not a big fan of the large garter section that edges the project. Also: The width of the garter stitches is far less flexible than the lace, and blocking this piece into square shape was a bit of a pain.
If you care for the garter section, choose a bigger needle for that last part.
