Getting ready for this exciting test knit! Birthe is a very accomplished dyer, spinner and designer! Stash diving and archaeological digs have now commenced, 11 wpi yarns is what is suggested in the pattern. My choice of yarns won’t come near the original which is ONE colour way, spun six ways(I want to do this too!), but since my passion is colour, it shall be an opportunity and a challenge. The cardigan pattern is a fantastic showcase of what is indeed possible with hand spun and hand dyed roving, or mixing semisolids and fades/gradients. And top down too, my fave!

Swatched, washed swatch, swatch assessed as all good, colours err….decided, and have included extra to achieve 11 wpi or dk weight yarn. Note that yarns are all handspun and are two to three plies.

Weights (starting) and placement;

Blue-arm-106 grammes
Red-arm-117 grammes
Yellow-back-97 grammes
Green-back-34+140 grammes
Violett-front-64, 69, 49 grammes, last as a backup for one skein which is too skinny to be a dk weight yarn.
Multi-front-198 grammes- started with 94 gramme skein.

Going out a bit on a limb for arms with a slightly lower weight, but, running out of yarn will be treated the usual way, as an opportunity!!

Been scratching my head over some of the skeins. Some are leftovers from other spinning projects, some are small batts, one is definitely EKF, and one is Southern Cross fibre, and some leftovers from Amazing technicolour dream sweater ( who would have thought leftovers after THAT ginormous project). One beautiful merino silk skein is a custom once off from Pidgeon Roof Studios, possibly one of her Rust colour combos, loved it to pieces. Yes, a special skein! Still mulling over where the dark blue one comes from, some amazing colours, possibly Allspunup.

Onwards to arms. Decided to play yarn chicken and let the colours decide the length, so yellow ran out some few metres ahead of purple. Have continued with blue arm, I know I will likely be short, but plan is to kit as far as I can, then knit rust arm, check how much is knitting and possibly use more of the green yarn. Hopefully will still be sufficient for the edging. XL is nice and loose so far, so not very fitted.

Update on yarn consumption;

Yellow- all gone.
Violet- 3 grammes remain out of 46, no need for the rest.
Green; 42 grammes remain all in all. Note this was spun as a very dense multiply.
Multi, ended up using it double due to fluctuating thickness: 98 grammes remain.
Working on the arms..and I know I am very likely low on yarn by quite a large amount. Will decide once I have run out, opportunities!
Update: Arms, 4-5 grammes left. Phew!

May 28, 2020

Yarn consumption, about 4 and 6 grammes left from each arm, did a less acute rate of decrease, every 5-6 row instead. Still managed to use what yarn was available, which was GOOD! Two very beloved skeins were picked for the arms.

Currently working on the edging. Approx 42 grammes of yarn allocated - green and hints of blue. Crocheting onwards!
Update; 23 left, so used about 20 grammes.

My XL cardigan used up 625 grammes prior to sewing in buttons! Still mulling over buttons, btw. Choices, choices, I haz too many.

Buttons, DONE! Waiting for some good light now hearts Buttonalia on Etsy is a genius when it comes to buttons and feel.
