Instead of cutting the towel in half I left it whole, folded it in half and attached the topper along the folded edge. I also replaced Row 1 of the instructions (where the pattern has you SC into the towel to attach the foundation row) with a row of embroidery chain stitch done with a tapestry needle. This eliminated the need to push a crochet hook through the towel.
