This is for “superwash yarn.” I think that if I used normal wool yarn, I could go up to US 6 but follow what I wrote for these socks. Ben is 7 years only - for this child size adjusment

US 5 needles
Cast on 38 sts. 19 on each needle
Increase to 62 sts. 31 on each needle
Change color, shaping of foot from 62 to 24 sts

The math:
Spencer’s (adult) 50 sts to 74 sts to 36 sts
Ben’s 38 to 62 to 24

Feet Brim section - change color

Round 1 and 2 knit

Round 3 k20, ssk x 2, k3tog, pl m knit 8, pl m, sl2, k1, psso, k2tog x 2, k20 (cable in the 8 sts)

Round 4 knit

Round 5 k16, ssk x 2, k3tog, pl m knit 8, pl m, sl2, k1, psso, k2tog x 2, k16
