r1 - 10 fdc, ch 3; r2 - dc in first, 2dc until end, 2dc in top of turning chain (20 sts) r3 - ch 4, {dc in next, ch 1} until last dc, dc in top of turning chain (20 sts, 19 spaces). this is picture #7.

picture #6 shows the center motif i’ve chosen to increase to begin the mutation. this works on any row where there are an odd number of ‘shells’ between the end and the center. in this case i have three, and the arrow points to the center one.

the first two rows of the pattern are the same.
r3 of patt - in center motif - {2 dc in 1st st, dc in 2nd} 5x. 15 sts. this is picture #5.
r4 of patt - in center motif - {(dc, ch1, dc) in 1st st; dc in next, ch 1, dc in next, ch 1} 4x, (dc, ch1, dc) in next st, dc in next, ch 1, dc in last. 20 sts, 19 ch-spaces.

picture #4 now shows the beginning of the mutation, and the stitch markers are where the center of these shells are.

when the first row of the pattern in the next iteration is made, these ch-spaces are to be treated the same as the center - a ch-7 before and after these spaces. the first row of the pattern of the next iteration is the silver yarn in picture #3.

each row is now worked as per the pattern. there are now three ‘centers’ instead of one, as per the original pattern.

i’ll be keeping the pictures and pattern instructions for the mutation, even though i’m now making this the triangle as per the original pattern. the only mutation mine will have is the first two rows.
