Piper Down!!
(I will definitely be making another of these with lace weight ~ what a joy to knit ~ many thanks to Kate for a sharing her gift with all of us!)

perfect pattern for this yarn ~ handspun gift from lightbeam ~ thanks Kelly! ~ she picked it out at her local spinner’s guild sale

it’s a mystery yarn ~ was told fiber content is a wool-silk blend bit think there may be a tad of nylon since I cannot break this yarn / completely unsure of the yardage so this pattern was just what I’ve been looking for … can be based on yarn weight (%’s of yarn usage for sections of the shawl are given so you can figure out how to make your yarn work)

I weighed the yarn (174.0g) and figured gauge/weight (about 13wpi) ~ guessing about 600yds(?) ~ it’s heavy fingering/sport weight which helps to decide on a needle size (think I’ll try a US 4 to start with and see how that looks)

increase section ~ I can use about 52g
hap center ~ I can use about 69g
decrease section ~ I can use about 52g

••• halfway checkpoint is 87g •••

project notes:

  • I didn’t see a M1 instruction so I chose to do a kfb in place of ‘M1,k1’ at increase points ~ I just did this increase for this similar shawl and kfb blends in well with garter stitch

  • for ssk ~ did slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, then knit these 2 together through back loop

  • my first chart repeat has a little glitch in it ~ there was chart errata that was sent after I had completed it…I had used the chart for the first repeat (so it’s got one little goof) but had switched to the written notes underneath the chart for the following repeats (the written words were correct) so the rest is fine…it’s just one stitch so I’m going to leave it (shocking ~ not like me at all)

  • I’m guessing I had about 600yds of yarn & I used 98% of it so about 588yds total

  • increase and decrease section each used 46.5g (27% each end) - 9 pattern repeats per end

  • hap center used 76.0g (44% total) - 13 pattern repeats

  • PREBLOCKING : 11.5”widest point/40”wingspan

  • BLOCKED : 15”widest point/75”wingspan (I blocked it HARD!! ~ managed to almost double the wingspan)
