With Simone’s OK, this is the version I devised.

CO 3 sts.
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: K1, YO 3times Knit to end
Row 4: Knit to YOs (P1, K1tb) in first two YOs, P1 in 3rd YO, K1.
Row 5: Knit
Row 6: BO 2 sts, knit to end
Row 7: Knit
Row 8: BO 2 sts, knit to end
Repeat Rows 3 to 8 until TENTACULUM is the length you want or you run out of yarn.

I found it is easier to knit into the back of a YO than trying to purl into the back, so I reversed what she had suggested.
I’ve also been knitting it in Stocking Stitch rather than Garter … only because it agrees with my yarn more.
