Pattern in the notes

9/20/2010: i did figure out how to make the pom-poms so i’m adding that at the bottom of the instructions.

i think i’m going to make this into a pattern to offer for free and i’ll take pictures so it’s easier to understand - especially the pom-pom part!

Very small amount of yarn was used. I’m making a bunch of these. The only trouble I’m having is making the pom poms. Need to figure out an easy way.

  1. Cast on 14 stitches with Carrot.
  2. Join to knit in the round
  3. K1, P1 for 2 rows
  4. Knit 2 rows
  5. Join Gold and cut Carrot.
  6. Knit 2 rows
  7. K2tog, knit 2 stitches. Repeat until you have knit around. End with knit 3 stitches. (10 stitches)
  8. K2tog around. (5 stitches)
  9. Cut yarn and pull through loops to tighten, then pull yarn through to the inside of hat.
  10. Knit ear flaps: each ear flap is 3 stitches wide.
  11. Attach Burgandy to the edge of the hat and knit 5 rows stockinette. K3tog. (Repeat for other earflap)
  12. Make Pom Pom*
  13. Add pin to back

Here’s how I did it. I did end up wasting some yarn, but it was the easiest way I could figure it out.

Pom-Pom

  1. cut yarn into 1 inch lengths, 4 of each color (you should have 12 lengths of yarn)
  2. gather them together so that the colors are mixed up, but keep them together in a little bundle
  3. take any color and cut a 6 inch length.
  4. use that 6inch length and tie the bunch of yarn at the center with a knot. tie it really tight!
  5. while holding the 2 longer strings of yarn together (best to hold right close to where the knot is), start cutting off the excess yarn from the bundle and try to form into as close to a round pom-pom as possible. make sure not to cut the 2 longer strings!
  6. take the longer yarn and pull through the top of the hat and tie inside. trim if needed or just stuff the extra yarn inside the hat.
