Notes

Made to go with Katherine’s Sheep Yoke Cardigan.

This pattern started as the Cozy Canuck Chullo, but I actually don’t think I used any of the stitch counts or design elements other than the basic shape and even that changed as I worked the sheep into the pattern! That served as the jumping point, however.

Earflaps were increased to 23 stitches and done in white and teal.

118 stitches were cast one for hat around in total to allow for the proper distribution of sheep. They went as follows:
CO 16
knit across 23 st from first earflap
CO 40
knit across 23 st from second earflap
CO 16. Join in round.

Edging was worked as:
row1: K1 Teal, K1 white, to end
row2: K1 Teal, K1 red, to end
row3: K1 Teal, K1 white, to end

Two rows were then knit in teal and I jumped to the sheep pattern, modifications were as follows:
Sheep were taken from the pattern for Sheep Yoke Baby Cardigan, with modifications. Using a bulkier yarn, I reduced the number of body rows of the sheep.

Sheep pattern mods:
3 rows of green
sheep done over 4 rows
grass done over six rows after sheep
4 rows sky blue
4 rows teal before starting top
1 row teal/white. 1 row teal, decreasing to 110 st

Top:
decreases worked on rows 4,7,9,11,13,15,17,19 and then finished off with K2 together (I think) to 5 st. Knit I-cord for about an inch, then finished off.

Red rows worked in rows: 6, 11, 15, 18

After the hat was done, I threw it into the washer and fulled it slightly (keeping a close eye on it!!) to make it denser and to shrink it a smidgen.

The hat fits Katherine (aged almost 8) comfortably, with room for her ponytail and room to grow a bit. The density makes it very warm and it covers not only her ears, but also her cheeks.
