Since this was one of the first proper patterns I tried I bought this yarn as a cheap option to practice with. It actually turned out really nicely though. Love this pattern and it’s a good introduction to cables.

My tension was much too tight throughout so I would be better to go down a needle size or two in future. It also makes a very dense fabric so may be worth trying even larger needles for a softer knit (though cables will be less defined).

Tried the crochet provisional cast-on which was easy at the start but impossible to work out the order of the stitches when it came to the three-needle bind off at the end, so will never be using it again for a cable pattern. EVER. Apart from that it was pretty easy once I got into a rhythm with the rows and didn’t have to keep looking at the pattern.

Will definitely be making more, in nicer yarn.
