My second pattern inspired by classic movies. The design of this one is taken from a set element during the dance number “Let Yourself Go,” a decorative frame around the bandstand.

True confession: “Follow the Fleet” is my least favorite Astaire/Rogers musical. Harriet Hilliard (later Harriet Nelson) and Randolph Scott’s characters are problematic, and the part seems an ill fit for Fred’s persona. To avoid encouraging people to see this movie, I thought about calling the pattern “Let Yourself Go,” but that immediately triggered an earworm. The dance number is good, but that song wears out its welcome.

So knit these socks, check out the “Let Yourself Go” number on YouTube, and go watch a better Astaire/Rogers musical, like “Top Hat” or “Gay Divorcee.”
