RS Work to where you want the buttonhole to be.
yarn to front, sl st purlwise. yarn to back and leave it there. (Sl one st from left needle. Pass the first slipped stitch over it) three times (leaving the yarn where it is). Slip the last bound off stitch back to the left needle. Turn work.

WS Using the cable cast-on with the yarn at the back, cast on FOUR sts. Turn work.

RS Slip the first stitch with the yarn in back from the left needle and pass the extra cast-on stitch over it to close the buttonhole. Carry on working to the end of the row like normal.

buttons - if I remember correctly, they come off a Saba black denim (or linen?) jacket that I bought at St Kilda Salvo’s when it was still on the corner of inkerman st and St Kilda rd. I bought the jacket just for the buttons, ripped them off, and donated the jacket back. Probably not very helpful for the op shop. I was a bit disappointed at the time bc when I bought the jacket I thought the buttons were wooden. They’re not but they’re still v nice.

St st sl st edge for seaming.
Sleeve increases worked 3 sts from edge
neck decreases - ssk on right front, k2tog on left front, decreases worked 1 st in from edge

28 feb - buttons all on! picked up sts for collar, used kfb for increases. done :)
23 feb - yay, over mental block. seamed up front border, sewed on a button!
8 feb 15 - k4, buttonhole across 3 sts, k to 6 from end, buttonhole, k 3. three buttonhole rows complete.
31 jan - cast off back and fronts. Back took precisely one ball. right front border complete and clipped in. shoulder seams done. pinned on sleeve tabs, armscye marked out and sleeves pinned/clipped in. have left v long ends and am aiming to use them up as efficiently as possible for seaming.
30 jan 15 - finally finished back and fronts to neckline shaping (24cms). seems to have taken a really long time. not happy w front neck shaping. decreases on right from should be ssk, k2tog on left front; i did mine 1 st in from the edge.
20 jan 15 - sleeves finished in kyoto. Both sleeves from one ball.
5 dec - cast on for cuffs and hems and little sleeve tabs. put it all on spare yarn to hold sts until we go away.
29 nov 14 - ooh, book arrived a few days ago!
