We’ve compiled a few knitting field comforts that were knit for members of the military such as socks, plain balaclava helmet, mittens and a stunning cabled vest from these resources that were often knit by Canadian volunteers in support of the war effort. We have rewritten the patterns, making the knitted articles compatible with modern fibres.

My grandmother, aka ‘Baba’ of Macedonian descent, would make these slippers by the hundreds…maybe thousands?! After wearing out yet another pair, I knew it was time to redesign these simple beauties before they are lost. The original design was more of a slip-on traditional slipper pattern. Pattern offers the option to complete the scarf in a two colour rib or one colour rib.

This cowl can be easily adapted to size up or down. Simply increase the stitch count by 24 and follow the chart pattern. The chart is a 24 stitch repeat. Either increase or decrease 24 stitches for ease.

Sizes are based on ages 4-6 (6-8, 8-10, 10-12) 12-14 years

Pieces are worked separately, not in the round. The neckline is is shaped for improved fit. Ribbed welts are knit in two colours, but the sweater is may also be knit in a single colour throughout.
