The shawl is knitted flat in a winged shape construction. It consists of three parts, finishing with a knitted-on border, that binds off the live stitches every 2nd row.

The main design element of the Sahlenburg shawl is the slip stich. This technique is used both in the colour and construction in a playful manner. Additionally, the combination of different yarns and switching right and wrong sides during knitting adds to the effect of knitting a complex shawl.
