Depending on how large you make this, some people call it a shawl and some a shawlette. It is knit from the bottom tip up.
Knitting: Scarf
This scarf is knit the long way but don’t let that scare you off. If you’re concerned about long cast-on’s just use some small stitch markers every 25 stitches or so in case you lose track. The results will be well worth it.
Knitting: Tote
Yarn: 1100 - 1200 yards of main color; 400 - 450 yards of pattern color
