Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
These lace socks were inspired by and created especially for First Quarter Sock Club: Cervalces by Yarnaceous Fibers. To me, the club colorway evokes birch trees in late winter. I designed the motifs to be representative of peeling curls of birch bark and the swelling buds that promise a lush summer canopy.

Knitting: Mittens
I love trees, and that devotion trickles down to each tiny appendage, leaf and twig. Leaf of Change Mittens are inspired by my delight in the annual arrival and departure of deciduous leaves.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Sometimes the yarn just tells me what it wants to be. It’s up to me to figure out the project to optimize yarn usage and ensure that the colors play well with each other.
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
There’s a lot to love about a cabled handknit sock. The finished socks are so impressive, especially to non-knitters. The delightful twists and turns keep the maker engaged throughout the process. Although they may look challenging, these cables are simple to knit.

Everyone knows I adore my sister-friend Sue. Some might, in fact, even be tired of hearing me express my love and devotion. (They can get over it.) Just in case she needs a reminder when I am not around, I designed a pair of shortie socks with a secret message.

Botan Yuki is Japanese for “Peony Snow,” those huge snowflakes that appear if we are particularly lucky. I’ve only seen them a couple of times in the past few years, and it just so happens one of those Botan Yuki snows came as I was knitting this scarf, with its giant snowflake motif.

In my opinion, hats are an ideal canvas for trying out new knitting techniques. They are low risk, because if you need to rip back and redo, the rows are not that long. Plus, hats are fast to knit and fun to wear!

I have tried to convince my son to wear knitted objects for several years. It’s not that he finds anything wrong with my knitting. He’s actually one of my greatest admirers; even as a teen, he would bring his friends into my studio and show off the walls of yarn and the objects I made. But he always declined my offers to knit something for him.

Knitting: Ankle Sock
As a designer, it would be far easier for me to make the same sock style per a template, over and over, just changing the design elements with each new pattern. But then the socks would not be good teaching tools for learning new techniques. I strive to produce patterns that have some sort of a twist. With socks, there are so many elements the ...

Lakeside Light is the smaller gauge sibling to my popular Lakeside boot socks. It’s designed for fingering weight yarn but still offered in five family-friendly sizes. I believe that extra small and extra big feet deserve to be warm too!
Knitting: Cowl
For me, the lack of physical human contact has been the worst part of managing this pandemic. I long for the days that I can put my arms around my best friend and squeeze her tight! This year, it just made sense to design a neck-hugging Valentine with the softest yarn in my stash. And since the only kind of hugs I am getting are the virtual, fr...

Although I loved my vision of a folded colorwork brim on this hat, the most important element as I was designing was the crown decreases.

Grab a couple of worsted-weight skeins and knit yourself some chunky cables. The bandana shape makes it so easy to style – just pull it over your head and go. I like to wear the point offset from the center (I think it looks jaunty) but you be you! Wear it how you want.
