About the Name
Merlin is a rather fascinating character within Arthurian literature. As a boy, Merlin was summoned by Vortigern, who was building a tower that kept collapsing. Vortigern had been told that if he sacrificed a fatherless child, the tower would stand. Merlin’s background is fuzzy and he was rumored to be “fatherless” (or to have been fathered by an incubus). Instead of being sacrified, Merlin told Vortigern about a pool that was found under the foundtations of the tower, which caused the land to be unstable and the tower to continue to fall. He also told of a prophecy of a fight between a red dragon and a white dragon, which was the first of many prophecies from Merlin.
Merlin was instrumental in the conception of Arthur, for it was by Merlin’s magic that Uther was able to enter the castle where Igraine was hiding under the guise of her husband. That night, the couple conceived Arthur. When the baby arrived, Merlin took the boy to be fostered away from his parents. At Uther’s death, Merlin created the sword in the stone as a test for the rightful king of England--or rather, as a way for Arthur to prove his rightful birth. Merlin became on of Arthur’s most trusted advisors. (Though Arthur didn’t always listen to Merlin, such as when Merlin recommended that Arthur not marry Guenevere.)
Later in life, Merlin falls in love with Nimue, who convinces him to teach her all about magic. After she has learned from him, she imprisons him within a tree (or cave).
