Acadia is one of our most versatile yarns in The Fibre Co. collection. A rustic blend of silk noil, baby alpaca and fine merino wool, this DK weight yarn is ideal for creating a handmade wardrobe that can be worn almost all year round.

Based on our success with these three fibres in our very first yarn, Terra, we increased the merino content just enough to give items knit in Acadia a little deeper ‘bounce’.

Acadia creates very wearable sweaters and shawls that you can enjoy in the cool evenings of summer as well as the big chill of winter.

With the knowledge that Acadia garments and accessories can be worn throughout most seasons, color choices are needed to continue the versatile feeling this range was developed for. The result is a palette that sits well together with warm browns and cool neutrals mixing with the rich reds and greens we associate with autumn.

Named after the great park in the US state of Maine, it seemed fitting to reflect the multiple colours that autumn brings to The Fibre Co.’s birthplace. Shade development for this collection goes deeper than the kettle dyeing formulas developed in our early days of fibre exploration though.

The colour of our base yarn influences the outcome due to the careful selection of a natural brown baby alpaca as a raw fibre. Changing the fibres that the dye sits upon leads to a heathered 2 ply yarn made from this natural brown baby alpaca that is blended with ecru merino tops and silk noil.

Layering fibres to help us build color upon color means that the Acadia range offers an ample supply of choices for shawls, sweaters and accessories.

These items work up a little faster than their fingering weight counterparts but enjoy a lovely lightweight fabric thanks to the silk and alpaca. Acadia is the perfect option for the year-round knitter.

Because most shades are hand-dyed, we recommend alternating hanks as you work to give an overall blended appearance.
