My sweet granny was a beloved and beautiful beacon of femininity and a strong presence in my life. She grew up in the 1920s and 30s in a tiny rural community where she learned quickly how to get by on the little that she had. By the 1940s she was a young wife and mother working to keep her family going with a husband away at war. Sewing, cooking, and crochet where not just creative outlets that she loved, but valuable skills that supported her family through shortages and rations and hardship. I have always admired her perseverance and that ability to turn so little into such abundance and beauty.
Granny tried, when I was young, to teach me the art of crochet, but I just wasn’t able to translate her left handed instruction into anything beyond a simple chain. In December of 2023, to remember my granny and pass on a touch of feminine beauty of my own, I taught myself, through YouTube videos, hours of practice, and determined perseverance, to make snowflake ornaments for my loved ones. Inspired by my granny’s love and feminine grace, I learned a new skill and found a great passion for the art.
Now with a family of my own, I’m always looking for opportunities to support them through my creative pursuits and crochet has become my favorite way to bring in that extra bit. I spend most days with hook in hand and enjoy so much the constant adventure of pattern design. I love how my perfectionistic tendencies hunt down little imperfections to create the perfect pattern and it is my great joy to share those patterns with you.
