A Corgi for Katie

This is an untested pattern that nobody has ever attempted to make. Will you be the first? Katie and I would love to see your work, so please post pictures!

This pattern is a departure from my alphabetical bird names project. My niece, Katie, is a budding crochet artist who loves corgis. I made this pattern for her to try out colourwork crochet for the first time. As such, it is written with some added instruction to help Katie succeed in her first project with carrying colours and colour changes.

Pattern is provided in both written and colour chart formats. A small practice pattern is included to learn to carry yarn.

This pattern is quite ambitious for someone doing colourwork for the first time. Concepts that you’ll need to familiarise yourself with include following a colour chart, carrying yarn both forward and backward, and using bobbins.

Lapghan will measure roughly 40” wide by 50” tall, and uses 6 skeins of Bernat Premium plus 5g of black (or dark grey) for the eye and nose.

Materials:

  • 4.5 mm hook
  • Worsted weight yarn in three colours: background (3 skeins), corgi back (2 skeins), and corgi belly (1 skein). Plus, a small amount of black or dark grey (5g) for the eye and nose.
  • Roughly 10 bobbins (clothes pegs work well)
  • Finishing needle

Stitches:

Ch chain
HDC half double crochet
(a separate practice pattern included uses SC)
