These top-down socks are my go-to projects anywhere, anytime. Knit in simple stockinette, I can knit around and around the leg and the foot without looking at my hands, making them the perfect project for a dark movie theater, sitting around the campfire, standing in line at the store, or attending my boys’ violin performances and robotics competitions. It’s amazing how many socks I can knit without even trying! I always have at least three pairs on my needles: one in my car, one in my purse, and one next to the couch.
The cuff, heel flap, gusset, and toe require a little extra attention (usually making this the pair by the couch at these transition points), but once you’ve knit these socks a few times, you’ll have the numbers for your size memorized. They will work with any fingering-weight sock yarn, and I’ve included instructions for making a contrast cuff, toe, and heel. Try a pair … or two … or three … Anywhere. Anytime.
