Beeton's Big Border
This 1870 border has a 31-stitch repeat + 2 selvage stitches. Originally, you were to cast on as many multiples of 31 stitches as needed but working 1 section at a time and sewing them together sounded a lot more do-able to me. Beeton’s instructions were poorly written with errors but it wasn’t Isabella Beeton’s fault. She had passed away 5 years before this needlework guide book of hers was published. Her widowed, publisher husband did the best he could.
The picot hem is easy to do: the hem is folded on a “yarn over, k2tog” row and sewn to the wrong side.
I added 2 selvage stitches for sewing pieces together later. This border pattern is predictable and surprisingly easy to knit!
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, yarn over, k1 tbl, k2tog, SSK, S2KP, sewing a hem and bind off.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
68 yards of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn will make one 33-stitch section of this border at gauge.
