Mounds of recycled road and building material, sand, and other “dirt” were the inspiration for this design. The French name I gave it sounds much more elegant than “Beautiful Dirt.”

The crescent shawlette is knit from the bottom up featuring first one lace pattern on the edging, which is worked straight without increases or decreases. A short transition leads into a second lace pattern in the short-row shaping section. Each in their own way, these patterns represent the rubble piles. The edging has textures as well as lace hinting at the disorganization of the pile. The yoke pattern is reminiscent of the slabs of highway and cinderblock found in the rubble.

The pattern is somewhat customizable by using varying numbers of stitches and repeats in the initial lace section. Directions are given in the pattern for making these alternatives. The pattern also includes directions for making this in a DK weight yarn and larger needles. With these alternatives, any yarn weight could be used.

It will look wonderful in long color run yarns, tonal or solid yarns. Being a one skein project, this knits up quickly and would be great for gift giving.
