Bibliothecary is an archaic or rare word that means a librarian or someone who takes care of a library. The design is inspired by my love of vintage books and their antique brown and gold covers.
The Bibliothecary shawl is worked flat from the right tip towards the left edge, with a delightful stitch pattern formed by passing stitches over and eyelets.
The sample uses DK yarn in two colors, but you can use just one color or play with multiple colors. The pattern includes instructions on how to shorten or lengthen your shawl by working more or fewer repeats of the pattern.
Pattern is also suitable for fingering and sport weight yarns (although you will need more yardage to get the same size) and perfect for highly variegated and colorful yarns.
SIZE
Adjustable
Sample finished measurements: 66 inches (167 cm) from side to side and 22 inches (56 cm) from top to bottom at deepest point (after blocking).
YARN
DK weight yarn in two colors, approximate amount:
Main color (brown)
- 309 yards (282 meters)
Contrasting color (gold)
- 245 yards (225 meters)
Shown in Malabrigo Yarn Rastita (100% Wool - Merino; 309 yds / 283 m- 100 g); 1 skein in colorway ‘Glitter’ for Main Color, and 1 skein in colorway ‘Mostaza’ for Contrasting Color.
NEEDLES
US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
GAUGE
17 sts and 20 rows = 4” (10 cm) in Knotted Openwork pattern, flat on US 7 (4.5 mm) needles, after blocking.
Gauge is not crucial for this project. However, changes might result in a different yardage requirements and final size of the shawl.
