Bindle Hat is a stashbusting adventure that turns fingering weight scraps into a thick, textural fabric using a modified Latvian braid technique (video tutorial included). You know those yarn bits too pretty to toss but too small to star in a project, this is their moment.

Each “color” in the design is created by holding four strands together, so you can mix speckles, solids, fades, and wild little leftovers into something that looks intentional and totally one of a kind. Video tutorials walk you through everything from choosing and changing colors to working the braid and finishing.

Design Details

Bindle is all about texture and color mixing. The modified Latvian braid pattern creates a woven effect that looks complex but is very doable once you get the motion down.

Because you’re holding four strands at a time, the fabric knits up thick and cozy, and the color is constantly surprising in the best way. The brim can be worked with four strands of fingering weight or two strands of DK held together, so you can use what you already have.

Construction Overview

Bindle Hat begins with a 1x1 ribbed brim worked in the round for a snug fit. The body is knit flat from brim to crown in the modified Latvian braid pattern, video tutorial included.

Short rows shape the crown, then the body is seamed using a three needle bind off and the top is cinched closed.

Yarn Notes

This pattern is made for scraps. Holding multiple strands together lets you combine tiny amounts of yarn into a cohesive fabric without needing perfect matches.

We love mixing one “anchor” strand that stays consistent with a rotating cast of leftovers, or going full chaos and changing all four strands at once for a confetti look. Speckles add depth, solids add structure, and fades can pull everything together.

The best part is you can use what you already love, and the hat will still look pulled together because the texture does so much of the work.
