Briochex Expansion Pack 2025 is an add-on pattern to my original Briochex blanket pattern, with 5 new Hexagon patterns made of different two-color brioche motifs.
Happy December!! Cozy up this holiday season with a brand new hexagon blanket pattern, perfect for all your Smalliday sets, Advents and mini skeins!
I did not create a blanket for this Expansion Pack, but have included a possible blanket layout here and in the pattern if you need some help!
Yarn Notes:
This pattern was specifically designed for mini skeins and is an Expansion Pack to my original Briochex pattern, released in 2024. However, you do not need the Briochex pattern. The hexes in this pack are the same size as the original Briochex pattern. I used 2 mini skeins for each hex, and created 5 new motifs. These can be added to your existing blanket, mixing and matching motifs. Or you can use this as a stand-alone pattern. This pattern will work with ANY minis you may have, especially if you have any Emma’s Yarn Practically Perfect Smalls sets or Fangirl Fibers minis in your stash. Please note that I did use one skein of Fangirl Fibers to replace one from the Sweetheart set. The yardage / meterage is an approximation based on using almost ALL of each mini skein. Please note that I’ve added a 5% buffer for all skeins to account for differences in gauge and tension. I did have yarn leftover when I completed each Hex.
This pattern has both written instructions and charts for each Hex Motif. Included in this original pattern are 5 Motifs that you can choose from. I did not make a blanket for this pattern, but have included a potential layout for blanket. I highly recommend working from the charts for the best knitting experience. If you are planning to knit from the charts, I recommend reading through the written instructions to make sure you don’t miss any important notes.
A few things you can do with your finished Hexes:
- Knit 1 to create a beautiful decorative mug mat for your home
- Knit 2 and seam them together using the Mattress Stitch and stuff with fiber fill or fabric to make an adorable plushie, pillow or small ornament (if you make a smaller Hex). The video tutorial below shows this method on another pattern, but the outcome is the same. Video Tutorial: http://bit.ly/BriocheMyHeart
- Knit 15 and seam them together to make a large lap blanket (shown above in a range of motifs)
- Knit 12 and seam them together to make a smaller blanket
Skill Level:
Intermediate - Advanced. I highly recommend having previous brioche knitting experience before making this blanket.
Techniques Used:
knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), sl1yo, brioche increases & decreases, Disappearing Loop Cast On, Elastic Bind Off, knitting in the round
Construction Notes:
These hexes are constructed entirely of two-color brioche, working from the center out. The shape is created by casting on very few stitches, then working in the round for the entire hex. Increases are worked every 4 rounds at 6 corners to create the hexagon shape. Once the Hex is complete, all stitches are bound off. The blocking process accentuates the final shape of the hex. Each hex can then seamed together to create a lap blanket, or any size blanket you desire.
Use your creativity with this project! I did not create a blanket for this pattern, but here is a reference for some inspiration. Since there are 5 motifs, you have a lot of options for different sizes. You could knit several of just one Motif to create your blanket, or mix and match to your heart’s desire. Combined with the original 3 Hex motifs from Briochex, that gives you 8 total motifs to play with! Above is the size of a large lap blanket using 15 Hexes, made using 3 of each Hex motif included in this Expansion Pack and this would use 30 mini skeins total. Please note the size of your blanket may differ depending on how many Hexes you make and yarn substitutions. The original pattern called for 12 Hexes, which is a great pairing with any Advent or Countdown boxes you may have.
Size Note:
This pattern is very easy to modify by adding or omitting pattern repeats for each Hex! Be sure to make all your hexes the same size if you are going to seam them together, to ensure that each side matches.
» Hex Size (same for all 5 motifs):
Hex: 13’’ / 33 cm width from side to side, 12’’ / 30.5 cm from top to bottom (taken after blocking).
Finished Blanket if you make 15 Hexes: 66’’ / 168 cm long and 30’’ / 76 cm wide
Please note that size may vary depending on type of yarn used. Multiple Schematics included in pattern.
