The brown bag hat is a beginner-friendly crochet beanie that actually fits well! After my search for beginner beanies to share with new crocheters only turned up crochet rectangles sown up the side and gathered on top, I grew frustrated.

I think beginners are capable of more than a crocheted rectangle. Furthermore, the fit of these hats leaves a lot to be desired. With that much fabric gathered on top, you can never get the hat securely on your head. This is frustrating and leaves new crocheters feeling like they’ve messed up, even though it is a flaw in the design of that hat!

This hat is still quite simple with a clever construction aimed at great fit. Interesting enough for the seasoned crocheter, straightforward enough for a first hat project. This hat can easily be made in an evening. Perfect for last minute gifts. That being said, save your time and effort for those truly worthy of a well fitting, warm woolen hat.
